China Unicom and Apple have finalized details of an agreement, which will introduce the latter’s most popular gadget, the iPhone 3G into the China market, likely in September, according to the China Business Network (CBN).

An iPhone 3G cellphone is undergoing testing in the China Telecommunication Technology Labs (CTTL), which confirms CBN’s report. CTTL was authorized by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) to carry out mandatory tests on the cell phone before it goes into the market.

CBN also says that iPhone’s OEM manufacturer, Foxconn, has played a crucial middle-man role in the signing of the agreement.

The Wi-Fi function will be disabled on the Chinese version of the iPhone 3G to comply with the requirements of MIIT, but other features of the popular mobile device will remain, according to the CBN.

Before the partnership with China Unicom, Apple had approached China Mobile as a way to enter the China market. However, there were conflicts in strategic goals, such as the control of profit chains which prevented the cooperation.

As for now, the details of the cooperation between Apple and its new partner China Unicom remain unclear. But as the introduction of the iPhone 3G corresponds to China Unicom’s strategy to boost its market image with well-known foreign products, it is probable that the second-largest mobile operator in China will tolerate more profits flowing to Apple.

However, there will be more competition for the iPhone 3G phones sold in China. According to a conservative estimate, more than 1 million shuihuo, or smuggled iPhones had already entered China because there are currently no legal channel of sales for these cell phones. Smuggled into China in thousands per day, these shuihuo iPhones with Wi-Fi capability pose a serious threat to the success of China Unicom’s plan.

Jul. 31, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Siliconware Precision Industries Co<SPIL>, the world’s second-largest chip packager and tester, on Wednesday posted second quarter net profit of NT$1.66 billion, down 31% year on year, its earnings per share were NT$0.54, sources reported.

SPIL's revenue in Q2 2009 fell 10.8% from a year earlier to NT$14.14 billion. The gross margin was 20.7% during the period, compared with 20.6% in Q2 2008. Meanwhile, the firm's operating margin was 15.6% in Q2 2009, compared with 2% in the quarter earlier and 15% in Q2 2008.

Although SPIL did not disclose the reasons about the net profit decrease, some analyst estimated that the weak demand along with a slowdown in orders from upstream clients are the main contributors to the result.

The firm's revenue in the third quarter of this year will increase by 10% quarter on quarter, said SPIL Chairman Bough Lin, adding that there will be an increasing demand in the emerging markets during the period.

Some source indicated that SPIL will probably see a 15% quarter-on-quarter increase of orders from Intel in Q3, the Commercial Times reported earlier.

SPIL's net income in H1 2009 reached NT$1.93 billion, with earnings per share of NT$0.62.

Feb. 20, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Shanghai saw individual housing loans reach RMB 310.769 billion at the end of 2008, RMB 34.599 billion or 14% less than last year, sources reported.

According to a recent report by the Shanghai Banking Regulatory Bureau, residential loans granted to developers in Shanghai have posted negative growth for five consecutive months since last August. At the end of last year, residential property loans for developers in Shanghai had increased RMB 16.59 billion year on year, while commercial property loans for developers had increased RMB 4.83 billion from the previous year.

In January, new individual housing loans from Chinese banks in the city totaled RMB 430 million, crashing down RMB 2.6 billion from a year earlier. Shanghai's new individual housing loans from foreign banks were only RMB 100 million in the first month of this year, RMB 250 million less than last year.

XPCC to cut cotton farmlandPublished: 29 Dec 2008 17:39:12 PST

Dec. 29, 2008 (China Knowledge) - Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC), a major cotton producer in the country, plans to reduce the cotton growing farmland from current 560,000 hectares to 433,333 hectares by 2011, according to Nie Weiguo, the political commissar of XPCC.

The land will be used to grow grains instead, said Nie, adding that XPCC hopes the annual grain output to exceed 1.4 million tons. The current areas dedicated to grain production are 233,333 hectares, as per industry sources.

Nie refused to comment on whether the plan will have any impact on the cotton output nationwide.

This year, XPCC plans to produce 1.3 million tons of cotton, up 4.2% year-on-year. The grain output is expected to reach 7.8 million tons, up 14.1% from a year earlier, said Nie.

According to the China Cotton Association, the country's total cotton output was above 7 million tons in 2007 and the figure is expected to hit 7.8 million tons this year.
